Freiburg Cycling Heatmap: Stadtradeln 2021–2025 This is an interactive visualization of five years of cycling GPS data from Freiburg im Breisgau's Stadtradeln campaign, covering 2021 to 2025. It needs JavaScript and WebGL to run. The map shows the same data three ways:

Density: every recorded 9-metre cell of the city, brighter where more cyclists passed. The busiest single cell, beside the university, recorded 45,759 passes in 2024.

Flow: particles travelling along real street segments in the direction cyclists rode, coloured by speed. The fastest stretch averages 45.5 km/h, descending from the Schauinsland toward Hofsgrund; the slowest crawls at 6.4 km/h through Haslach-Haid.

Change: the difference between any two years. Comparing 2021 with 2024, cycling was recorded in roughly 188,000 places it had not reached before.

The single busiest route carried 149,868 recorded rides in 2024, a cycle path out toward Ihringen. Data source: Stadt Freiburg im Breisgau, published as open data via the Freiburg Geoportal WFS.
